Dzi stones appeared in 1000 BC, in ancient Tibet. Dzis were crafted using agate as the base stone & fabricated with lines & circles using ancient methods. Fear of the evil eye was taken seriously by people & they created talismans. Shepherds & farmers pick them up in the grasslands & while cultivating fields. Because dzi are found in the earth, Tibetans cannot conceive of them as man-made. Dzi are found in fields because ancient monks were burned in funeral pyres wearing the beads & the beads remained. They are believed to attract protector deities. In Tibet, Cross of Happiness pointing right is a Buddhist symbol for the teaching dharma of Gautama Buddha & left is a remnant of early Tibetan Bon religion. It is an important symbol in Yungdrung Bon, the Tibetan name for swastika - yungdrung - forms part of its name. Yungdrung Bon is translated as the Religion of the Swastika. In Yungdrung Bon, the swastika is rich in symbolism. Primarily represents the unchangeable, indestructible state, Buddha-nature, Nature of Mind, fundamental ground of existence & light.
